Parents of severely disabled children often find it
difficult to perform everyday tasks such as going to
the grocery store that everyone else can take for
granted. Don’t even ask about vacations.
Familycapped, a Central New York organization
that offers support for families of children with
multiple disabilities, decided to create a pediatric
respite house to help give these parents and families
a brief break from their responsibilities. This facility
would also provide exceptional medical care while
offering a community setting for these kids to share
in the fun and friendships we all experience from
being with others.
Familycapped member Doug Klepper was
instrumental in realizing the dream that was to be
Casey’s Place. His construction management
expertise and industry contacts proved to be
invaluable in securing over $600,000 in donations
of time, materials, and cash to bring the total build
cost under $750,000.
Casey’s Place is a 10,000 square foot EnergyStar compliant house that features large,
easily navigable and well-lit rooms such as a media room, recreation room, accessible
kitchen, and 6 themed bedrooms. All showers and bathing facilities are fully accessible
with reclining Air Jet tubs and state-of-the-art overhead lifting systems.
The infrastructure also has oversized doorways for wheelchair accommodations, dual air
and water filtration systems, radiant floor heat, central air, tempered glass windows, an
elevator, dual pump sewage ejection system, and backup generator.
Casey’s Place was completed in November 2004, one year after it’s ground breaking and
officially opened its doors on December 17, 2004 and has to date provided overnight,
school break, and summer day programs too more than 100 children and families
throughout the Central New York region.
In January of 2006, Casey’s Place was named the National Project of the Year by the
National Association of Home Builders and Doug Klepper was Named the 2005 Local
Builder of the Year by the Home Builders Association of Central New York for his work in
helping making dreams come true.
